Which new iPhone should I buy?
iPhone 8 Plus or iPhone X
You really can't go wrong with either new the new iPhone X or the 8 Plus, on the inside they are all pretty similar.
The both have the following goodies:
- 12MP wide-angle and telephoto cameras with 4K video recording
- The same A11 Bionic chip, neural engine and M11 motion co-processor
- Wireless charging
- Come in 64GB or 256GB capacities
- True Tone display with wide colour display (P3), 3D Touch and 625 cd/m² max brightness
- Splash, water and dust resistance
Thats great but what's different?
The size
The iPhone 8 Plus is the bigger and heavier phone even with it's smaller display (5.5" vs 5.8" of the iPhone X). The new iPhone is narrower than previous models and fits better in the hand. We think the iPhone X dimensions are the best yet, but if you have larger hands and/or like the bezels, the iPhone 8 Plus may be a better fit.
8 Plus: 158.4 x 78.1 x 7.5 mm, 174 grams
X: 143.6 x 70.9 x 7.7 mm, 202 grams
The display
The biggest difference is the display. The 8 Plus sports the same 5.5 inch Retina display as it has in previous models, a high definition LCD with 1920 x 1080 resolution.
The X features a 5.8 inch Super Retina HD HDR display. It is an edge to edge OLED display, which has a much higher contrast ratio and support for high dynamic range video. It’s got a super resolution (2436 x 1125) too. The new display makes the colours richer, the text clean and sharp and a true black thanks to the OLED display.
8 Plus: 5.5-inch, 1920x1080 LCD, 401 ppi, 1300:1 contrast ratio
X: 5.8-inch, 2436x1125 OLED, HDR, 458 ppi, 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio
The battery
The 8 Plus also has an slight edge on battery life, about an hour extra of internet usage or video playback.
In our opinion the winner is...
The X is more compact with a bigger screen and a sexy new design. This is the first of the next generation of Apple's technology and if you don't mind learning a new gesture or two we think it is the best iPhone yet.
On the other hand if you need the familiar home button , a display that's a bit larger for some needs or a lower price, then the 8 Plus is a great phone too.
