Everything is connected nowadays, wireless networks connect your home devices together and can also connect you to the Internet. If either your Internet or your Wireless are not working properly it can affect your software (like email) and your devices’ ability to communicate with the Internet

Internet is not working?

Check if the internet light on your modem is on, if not, restart the modem; if it is on and you are connected via wireless, try turning Wi-Fi off and then on again.

Hardware & Devices

There are many reasons that computers stop working properly, many of them have to do with the actual hardware malfunctioning, or just wearing out. Hardware usually has a lifespan, sometimes you can re-set things, but other times you may need to replace the parts.

My computer keeps freezing?

You might be running unwanted applications or too many applications at once, it could also be a hardware problem such as a hard drive with logical errors.

My computer won’t start?

If you get an icon displaying a folder with a question mark it means the operating system cannot be found, it may be corrupted or your hard drive may need replacement.

My computer is running slow?

Perform some maintenance on your machine ie remove unwanted software, check for software or hardware issues and if required perform updates or upgrades. Please do not install software that claims to speed up your computer, we do not recommend any of these types of applications, since from experience we have encountered more problems after they have been installed. My laptop won’t work unless it’s plugged in to the power?

There could be a couple of reasons your laptop battery does not last long when not plugged to the power. The laptop’s battery may not be charging properly and may need replacing or the charger you are using may not be charging the battery properly and it may need replacing.

How do I backup my computer?

Connect an external USB drive and go to System Preferences and under system click on Time Machine and turn it on, you will be asked to select the disk you want to backup to, the drive may need to be formatted as a Mac OS Extended (Journaled), please note if a format is required all content on the drive will be erased.

Can I increase the space available on my computer?

You can increase the available space by emptying the rubbish bin and removing unwanted files or applications, if this does not free up enough space you can upgrade your hard drive with a bigger one.

My apple magic mouse is not scrolling?

This is the mouse that has a scroll ball on top, the most common reason for this happening is dirt, you need to clean it, to do this use a piece of paper, hold the mouse upside down and slide it across the paper rolling the scroll bar on it applying a bit of pressure, you will notice dirt will get stuck on the paper.

How does iCloud work?

iCloud is a service that apple provides for its users, it allows you to save your contacts, calendars, notes, and documents online. This means you can access them from anywhere at any time, and as you can access them from any of your apple devices, whenever you make a change on one it syncs to all your other devices.

Can an application really make my computer run faster i.e. MacKeeper?

How can I make things bigger (change resolution) on my computer?

Go to System Preferences, displays, select scaled, select the resolution wanted.

Should i buy a Mac or a Windows PC?

It depends on what you want to use it for, there are many applications that are common to both systems but there are also important applications that will only run on either one. For the general home user who uses his computer to access the internet, get mail, create documents, save pictures and music, a Mac is an ideal computer as it is reliable, user friendly and not as prone to viruses.

Do I need a Mac to sync my iPhone/iPad?

No, all you need is iTunes and apple provides a Windows version.

Can I run Windows on my Mac?

Yes you can, it is possible to run Windows simultaneously with Mac or you can run Windows on its own as a normal PC.

Do Macs get viruses?

Currently there are no known viruses for Mac but there are unwanted applications that affect the performance of your machine, ironically most of these applications claim to make your Mac faster.
