Apple’s September 2019 Event: iPhone 11, Apple Watch Series 5 and New iPad

Apple has announced the iPhone 11 family, Apple Watch Series 5 and a new 10.2-inch iPad, with final launch details for Apple Arcade and Apple TV+.

Apple’s September event has delivered a new iPhone line-up, an Apple Watch that can keep its screen visible all the time, and a larger entry-level iPad. Apple also confirmed launch plans for Apple Arcade and Apple TV+.

iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro

The iPhone XR is followed by the iPhone 11, which adds a second rear camera for ultra-wide photos and uses the new A13 Bionic chip. Night mode should improve photos in dark scenes, while the front camera can now record 4K video.

The iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max add a third rear camera for telephoto shots, an OLED Super Retina XDR display and longer battery life. The practical choice will come down to whether you need the Pro camera system and OLED screen, rather than raw speed, because all three phones use the A13 chip.

Apple Watch Series 5

Apple Watch Series 5 introduces an always-on Retina display, so the time and key information remain visible without raising your wrist. It also adds a built-in compass and international emergency calling on cellular models.

The overall design remains close to Series 4. Anyone with a recent Apple Watch may find the changes useful rather than essential, while people upgrading from an older model will notice a much larger step.

A larger standard iPad

The new seventh-generation iPad moves to a 10.2-inch Retina display and adds the Smart Connector for Apple’s keyboard cover. It supports Apple Pencil and runs iPadOS, while retaining the A10 Fusion chip and familiar Home button design.

This is the practical, lower-cost iPad in the range. The larger screen and keyboard support make it more useful for school and basic office work without pushing buyers towards iPad Pro.

Apple Arcade and Apple TV+

Apple Arcade will open later this month with a catalogue of games that has no advertising or in-app purchases. Apple TV+ will follow in November with Apple’s original programmes inside the TV app.

Both services will include Family Sharing. The important point is that they are optional subscriptions, not requirements for using an iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple TV.

Before upgrading

The new iPhones and Apple Watch will be available later this month, while the new iPad follows shortly after. Back up your current device before moving across, and check whether any older accessories rely on a connector or case size that has changed.

For most people, the iPhone 11 looks like the best balance of camera, performance and price. The Pro models are mainly for buyers who place a high value on the OLED display, telephoto camera and extra battery life.
