The New 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 Explained: Performance, AI & Price
Apple's new 14-inch MacBook Pro gets the M6 chip, bringing faster performance, deeper AI and up to 24 hours of battery life. Here's what it costs in Australia.

Apple has refreshed its entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro with the new M6 chip, bringing a genuine jump in performance and AI capability without changing the design, display or price from the outgoing M5 model.
If you’re considering this as your next business laptop, here’s what’s actually changed, who it suits, and what it costs in Australia.
What’s different with M6
The new MacBook Pro gets a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU, two more cores each than the previous M5 model. Apple says this delivers up to 30 per cent faster graphics performance and up to 25 per cent faster on-device AI workloads compared with M5, with an even larger jump for anyone still using an older M1 Mac.
The GPU also picks up Neural Accelerators in every core, alongside a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, Apple’s most capable AI hardware yet in this model. Memory bandwidth increases to up to 170GB/s, and unified memory starts at 16GB, configurable up to 32GB.
Built for running AI locally
Apple is leaning heavily into on-device AI with this update. The headline claim is around running large language models directly on the laptop, so prompts and data stay on the device rather than being sent to a server. Apple cites up to 13 times faster LLM prompt processing compared with the original M1 MacBook Pro, and up to 1.3 times faster than the outgoing M5 model.
For small businesses handling sensitive client information, such as legal, accounting, health or creative work, this is a genuine reason to care about the upgrade, rather than just a marketing number. Running a capable AI model locally, without sending files off to an overseas server, is becoming a realistic option on this chip rather than something that needs a far more expensive Mac.
Battery life and display
Apple quotes up to 24 hours of battery life, the longest ever in a Mac, including meaningful improvements for anyone upgrading from an Intel or M1 model. Fast charging is also supported, reaching roughly 50 per cent charge in 30 minutes with a compatible higher-wattage adapter, such as Apple’s 96W Power Adapter.
The Liquid Retina XDR display itself hasn’t changed from the previous model. It’s the same 14.2 inch panel with up to 1600 nits of peak HDR brightness, a 1,000,000 to 1 contrast ratio, and ProMotion up to 120Hz for smoother scrolling and motion. A nano-texture display option remains available for reducing glare in bright environments.
Connectivity and everyday features
Wireless connectivity moves to Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, a genuine upgrade from the previous Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. Ports are unchanged from recent generations, with three Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI, MagSafe 3, an SDXC card slot and a headphone jack, so most existing docks, monitors and accessories will continue to work without adapters.
The 12 megapixel Center Stage camera with Desk View, three-microphone array and six-speaker sound system all carry over from the previous model.
Who this suits
If your current M4 or M5 MacBook Pro is handling your workload comfortably, this update is unlikely to be worth an upgrade on its own. Where it earns its place is for anyone still on an Intel-based or M1 Mac who’s overdue for a replacement, or a business specifically wanting to run AI tools locally rather than relying on cloud-based services. For most everyday office work, email and Microsoft 365, the performance on offer here is well beyond what’s actually needed, so budget and timing matter more than chasing the newest chip.
Pricing and availability in Australia
Apple is taking pre-orders for the new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 from 29 October, with units arriving from 6 November.
The base configuration, with 16GB of unified memory and 1TB of storage, starts at RRP A$3,199 inc. GST, or RRP A$3,039 inc. GST with education pricing.1 It’s available in space black and silver.
If you’re trading in an older Mac, Apple’s trade-in program can put credit toward the new machine, and AppleCare+ or AppleCare One remain available for ongoing cover.
