Apple Studio Display or Another Monitor? What’s Worth Buying for Your Mac

Is Apple's Studio Display worth it, or will another monitor do? See the Australian prices and what makes a monitor look sharp on a Mac.

Apple’s Studio Display is the obvious choice for a Mac, but it is not the only good one. Plenty of other monitors work well with macOS for much less. The key is knowing what makes a screen look sharp on a Mac.

Why sharpness matters on a Mac

macOS looks its best on screens with a high pixel density, which means lots of pixels packed into each centimetre. Text is crisp and everything on screen is a comfortable size.

That is why a 27-inch 5K screen, like Apple’s, is the sweet spot. A 27-inch 4K monitor is a good, cheaper alternative and looks sharp for most office work. Where people get caught out is with large monitors at lower resolutions, such as a 32-inch 4K or a wide 1440p screen. Text can look softer, and that is noticeable after a day of reading documents.

Apple Studio Display

The Studio Display is a 27-inch 5K screen with a built-in camera, microphones and speakers, so a MacBook needs just one cable for its screen, camera, sound and charging. It is the simplest setup there is, and it looks right from the moment you plug it in.

It starts at A$2,5991. Nano-texture glass, which cuts reflections in bright offices, is from A$3,0991. The standard stand only tilts, so if you need to raise the screen, choose the height-adjustable stand, from A$3,2991, or use a monitor arm.

Apple Studio Display XDR

The Studio Display XDR is built for professional video, photography and design work. It is much brighter, shows deeper contrast, refreshes faster for smoother motion and covers the colour ranges used for print and film. It starts at A$5,4991. For office work, it is more than you need.

Other monitors

A good 27-inch 4K monitor from a reputable brand costs far less than a Studio Display and suits most staff. Look for a USB-C or Thunderbolt connection that also charges your MacBook, so one cable does everything. You will usually need a separate webcam, or you can use your MacBook’s own camera.

Check that your Mac supports the number of screens you want. Some models, such as the MacBook Neo, support only one external display. See our guide to MacBook Neo and when to buy a MacBook Air instead.

Which to choose

For a home office or a team where everyone spends all day on screen, the Studio Display is worth it if the budget allows, because of its sharpness and its built-in camera and speakers. For most office staff, a 27-inch 4K monitor with USB-C charging is the best value. Choose the Studio Display XDR only for colour-critical or video work.
