iPhone Duo Explained: Apple’s First Foldable iPhone, Who It Suits & What It Costs
iPhone Duo explained: two displays, Split View, a 48MP camera system, Touch ID and eSIM, plus Australian prices from A$3,499 and the 23 October date.

iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable iPhone. It opens like a book, and it is one of the biggest changes to the iPhone in years. This guide covers what it is, what you give up and what it costs in Australia. It is part of our September 2026 event coverage.
Two displays in one phone
Opened, iPhone Duo has a 7.6-inch inner display. It is 50 per cent larger than the display on the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Duo is the thinnest iPhone ever when open, at 5.2 mm. The inner display has a nano-texture finish that reduces glare and makes the crease less visible.
Closed, the 5.4-inch outer display gives you 90 per cent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro. Apple says it is comfortable to use one-handed and fits in a pocket. Both displays have the same aspect ratio, so content scales across them, and both support ProMotion up to 120Hz and up to 3,000 nits peak brightness outdoors.
Closed, it measures 84.1 mm wide by 117.8 mm tall and 11.3 mm thick, and it weighs 254 grams.
How you use it
Apple has adapted iOS 27 for the folding design. It describes five ways to use it.
The folding design supports five positions. Landscape gives you Split View, portrait provides a wider keyboard, and closed mode turns it into a compact phone. You can also sit it on a surface for video or workouts, or stand it up for StandBy.
For work, Split View is the main appeal. You can keep a document open while you write an email, or a recipe visible while you make a shopping list. Apps need to make good use of the larger screen, so check the ones you rely on.
Cameras
iPhone Duo has two rear cameras. The 48MP Fusion Main camera also gives you a 12MP optical-quality 2x telephoto. The second is a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide. Apple’s Smart Take feature can capture pictures automatically.
The FaceTime camera sits beneath the inner display and stays hidden when you are not using it.
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max have a three-camera system with a dedicated telephoto lens that reaches 4x and 8x optical-quality zoom. If you shoot a lot at a distance, that is a real difference.
Performance and battery
iPhone Duo uses the same A20 Pro chip as the iPhone 18 Pro. Apple says it has a custom-designed vapour chamber to keep it cool, and a dual-battery design for all-day battery life.
Built to last
The frame and hinge cover are grade 5 titanium. The front is Ceramic Shield 2, the back is Ceramic Shield, and the inner display has a scratch-resistant coating. It is rated IP68 for water and dust resistance, to a depth of 6 metres for up to 30 minutes. How the fold holds up over years of daily use is something only time will show.
What to know before you buy
iPhone Duo uses Touch ID in the side button, not Face ID. It is eSIM only, so it has no physical SIM tray. If you are buying for a business, check that your mobile carrier supports eSIM before you order. It supports Apple Pencil (USB-C). As with the iPhone 18 Pro, there is no power adapter or EarPods in the box, only a USB-C charge cable.

iPhone Duo or iPhone 18 Pro?
At 256GB, iPhone Duo costs A$1,4001 more than the iPhone 18 Pro and A$1,2001 more than the iPhone 18 Pro Max. For that, you get the largest display ever on an iPhone in a folding design. You give up the third camera.
Choose iPhone Duo if a bigger screen for multitasking and reading matters most. Choose the Pro or Pro Max if you want the strongest camera zoom and a conventional single-screen phone. Our iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max guide has the details.
Software and Siri AI
iPhone Duo runs iOS 27 with Apple Intelligence and Siri AI. Our iOS 27 guide covers the software, and our Siri AI guide explains what it does and the limits.
