Apple’s Spring Loaded Event: M1 iMac, iPad Pro, AirTag and Apple TV 4K

Apple's Spring Loaded event brings a colourful M1 iMac, M1 iPad Pro, AirTag trackers, a new Apple TV 4K and a purple iPhone 12.

Apple’s Spring Loaded event covered a wide range of products: a redesigned 24-inch iMac with M1, an M1-powered iPad Pro, the long-awaited AirTag item tracker, a new Apple TV 4K and a purple finish for iPhone 12.

A colourful 24-inch iMac with M1

The new iMac is much thinner than the model it replaces and comes in seven colours. Its 24-inch 4.5K Retina display sits in a compact body powered by the same M1 architecture introduced in last year’s MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac mini.

It also brings a 1080p camera, improved microphones and a six-speaker system, which should make it a stronger all-in-one Mac for home offices and video calls. Some configurations include a keyboard with Touch ID.

iPad Pro moves to M1

The new iPad Pro also uses M1. The 12.9-inch model gains a Liquid Retina XDR display based on mini-LED technology, while both sizes add Thunderbolt and an ultra-wide front camera with Center Stage, which can keep people framed during video calls.

The hardware is exceptionally capable. The buying question remains whether iPadOS and the apps you use can replace a Mac for your work.

AirTag joins the Find My network

AirTag is a small tracker for keys, bags and similar items. It appears in the Find My app, can play a sound when nearby and uses Apple’s wider Find My network to report the location of a lost item privately.

On compatible iPhones, Precision Finding can show the direction and distance to a nearby AirTag. A replaceable battery and optional holders make it practical, although it should not be treated as a live people or pet tracker.

Apple TV 4K and Siri Remote

The new Apple TV 4K uses the A12 Bionic chip and adds support for higher-frame-rate HDR video. The more visible change is a redesigned Siri Remote with a clickpad and a power button for the television.

Existing Apple TV 4K owners may find the remote more compelling than the box itself unless they need the new video support.

Availability

AirTag and the purple iPhone 12 will be available first. Orders for the iMac, iPad Pro and Apple TV 4K open later this month, with deliveries expected in the second half of May.

The iMac is the largest everyday change, AirTag fills a clear gap in Find My, and the iPad Pro pushes tablet hardware further ahead. Buyers should choose based on the work they need to do, not the processor name alone.
