Microsoft 365 Apps Not Opening on a Mac? How to Fix It

Word, Excel or Outlook will not open on your Mac? Check updates, the licence and a July 2026 change, then try Safe Mode and a new user account.

If Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Outlook will not open on your Mac, the cause is often simpler than it looks. It is usually an update, a conflict with macOS, a damaged user account or a licence problem. This guide works through the checks in order, starting with the cheapest.

What it looks like

The app may bounce in the Dock and never open, or show its splash screen and hang. One app may open while the others will not. If more than one app fails in the same way, the cause is usually Office itself, macOS or your user account, and not a single file.

Also check whether the apps open but will not edit or save. Since 13 July 2026, some Office apps on a Mac can open and print files but not edit, save or create them. That is a licence problem, and our guide to Office 2024, Office 2019 and Microsoft 365 on a Mac explains the fix.

Restart your Mac

Restart first. It clears stuck processes and often fixes launch problems after an update. When it starts again, open one app, such as Word, instead of clicking several at once.

Update Office and macOS

Older Office versions can stop working after a macOS update, and older macOS can cause problems with newer Office. If you can open any Microsoft app, choose Help, then Check for Updates, and install everything. Microsoft updates Office for Mac about once a month.

Then check macOS. Choose Apple menu, then System Settings, then General, then Software Update. Microsoft supports Microsoft 365, Office 2024 and Office 2021 for Mac on the three most recent versions of macOS. If you are on an older version, the apps still work but stop getting updates, including security updates. After a major macOS upgrade, update Office straight away. See our guide to macOS 27 Golden Gate for which Macs can upgrade.

Check the licence

Sometimes an app seems broken when the problem is the licence. It is more likely if the apps install normally but keep asking you to sign in or activate, or show reduced functionality. The wrong Microsoft account may be signed in, or an old licence may conflict with the new one.

If you can open Word, choose Word, then About Word, and check what it says. If it shows Microsoft 365, you have a subscription. If it shows Office 2021 or Office 2019, you have a one-time purchase. Check that the account matches the one you expect.

If an old Office 2019 licence is conflicting with a new Microsoft 365 or Office 2024 licence, Microsoft’s License Removal Tool removes the old licence. You do not need to remove the apps. Then open an Office app, sign in with the new account and choose Help, then Check for Updates.

Try Safe Mode

Safe Mode starts your Mac with only the essentials and turns off many third-party items and extra fonts. If the apps open in Safe Mode but not normally, the cause is often a login item, a font, a background utility or a setting in your user account.

On a Mac with an Apple silicon chip, shut down, then press and hold the power button until you see the startup options. Choose your startup disk, hold the Shift key and click Continue in Safe Mode. On an Intel Mac, restart and hold the Shift key until you see the login window.

After testing, restart normally and see whether anything has changed.

Test another user account

Create a second user account on the Mac and try Word or Excel there. If they open, the problem is with your original account, not with Microsoft 365. That is far quicker than reinstalling Office again and again.

Check macOS privacy settings

After a major macOS change, apps can run into permission problems. Open System Settings, choose Privacy & Security and check that the Microsoft apps have access where they need it, especially to files and folders and Full Disk Access. Word and Outlook can be sensitive to this, particularly when they work with cloud files and desktop folders.

Reinstall only after the simpler checks

It is tempting to reinstall Microsoft 365 straight away. If the cause is an old build, a user account problem or a licence conflict, reinstalling often does not fix it on its own. If you do reinstall, sign in with the correct Microsoft account from the start. A clean removal involves deleting leftover files, and a mistake can lose data, so ask us if you are unsure.

When it points to something bigger

If the apps still will not open after updates, a restart, Safe Mode and a test in another user account, the problem needs a closer look. It may be in the Mac user account, the Office installation or the licence. Guessing at that point usually wastes time. Our checklist for updating your Mac safely is worth reading first if this started after an upgrade.
